INDYSPOTLIGHT: wow. That’s quite a long time. Sorry you made mention of your music life being spitted into 2. Please how do you mean. Can you explain?

 

Dw: yeah I did and what I actually meant was that I didn’t start music as a gospel artiste. I started as a secular Fuji singer and that’s as far back as 2002 and I did that till 2006, before a friend of mine told me something that changed my life up till date. Though it wasn’t that during my secular music years I was living a wayward life but I just don’t have the full knowledge of whom Jesus Christ is personally for myself, I only knew him coz my mum was a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. So God used a friend of mine to save me from the path I was walking then, he {my friend} came to me one evening and told me something’s that I will summarize in this way “ what you are doing now is not the master plan of God for your life.” He was the one who made me understand that devil gives what looks like God’s master plan to one, which is actually the counterfeit and takes the master plan. He said a lot of things that I can’t just start explaining here. But in a short word, he made me understand that that’s not my destiny and not my calling. So that’s how I dropped my secular music pursuit and embrace that which is divine from the father. Hmmm! So that’s the 1st phase of my music life.

 

The second phase started that same here 2006, when I converted to singing gospel, but the truth here is that I still don’t know Jesus fully for myself. I wasn’t serious with the gospel career, I wasn’t doing it for the FATHER, I was still in pursuit of money, fame, women and so on, which eventually landed me in jail, but God intervened after I have learnt my lessons. I was freed after spending 2weeks in the cell. Hmm! The turn around  came for me and my destiny in 2009, when I gain admission into the university, where my brother was actually the evangelical coordinator of a fellowship, so I got born again and saved. It was a new chapter of my life, it was like an open heaven for me. It was that year on a journey to my home town I had an encounter with God, it was there I was given the vision to “CONNECT MAN2GOD WITH MUSIC”. So in conclusion, being a born again gospel music artiste started for me in 2009, which I can say its been 5years now {sigh}. I think this is the first time am explaining this to down details like this.

 

INDYSPOTLIGHT: (Sigh) Hmm! What a story, what a journey. Thank God for sending His son to redeem you. You could have been one of those bad boys now, you know. (Both Laugh). So how old are you, coz looking at your story, hmmm! Don’t wanna guess. Just tell us.

 

Dw: (Laugh). Noooooo. Am still very young. Am in my mid twenties (above 22).

 

INDYSPOTLIGHT: Okay. But all the same you are not a baby anymore. So even before you started singing, what have you been doing generally, what led to you discovering your singing gift?

 

Dw: (Smile). Well before I started singing I have been mummy’s boy and have been hawking cooked food for her and have been schooling. And actually her death led the discovering of my gift.

 

INDYSPOTLIGHT: OMG! Sorry for the lost of your mum. May her soul continue to rest in peace.

 

Dw: Amen. Thanks

 

INDYSPOTLIGHT: Two things here now, hawking cooked food for your mum and her death? Can you put more light into that for us?

 

Dw: Hmmm! (Sigh). Well the story of my hawking started like this, in the year 1998 or let me say before then, we were based in the city Lagos Nigeria, before the death of my grandmother which forced us to come down to my home town for her funeral in 1998. So after her funeral in 1998, that’s when we had the setback. It was so unfortunate for us, everything just went bad and backward. We were unable to go back to the city again of which reason I don’t know up till date. So we got stucked in the village, me, my brother and our 2 newly born babies (twins). Hmmm! So we accepted fate and in order for us to continue life over there, she had to put up something to enable her to sustain us and send us to school. So sweet mother ventured into food selling, although she was a caterer in the City before we came down, so setting up a locate restaurant wasn’t that difficult for her. That’s how it started, so before we (me and my brother) were enrolled into school we had to hawk the cooked food in order to raise money for our schooling her also house keeping. We did that for a period of time and we were able to raise some money for our schooling. We were enrolled in a private school, though thing’s weren’t easy then, but for the fact that we still had our mother to look after us, we were grateful. It was in 2001 that we had another terrible earth shaking incident in our life. We lost our dear mother to an untimely death. Mama didn’t wait for us to grow so that we can pay her with love and care for all her suffering for us. She was the sweetest of all, gentle, easy going, benevolent, and caring and indeed a mother to us and people around us. What a bad and evil day for us, not just us but for the growing up twin who barely knows their mother fully well. They were still young and just stopped breast feeding. That’s how we lost our sweet mother to an untimely death.

 

INDYSPOTLIGHT: Hmmm! May her soul continue to rest in peace. She was indeed a sweet mother. So can you tell us about your educational background?

 

Dw: well to God’s glory, mum succeeded in putting us in school and after her death, some of our family members stood up to help. So we schooled and by his grace, am a certified BUSINESS ADMINISTRATOR (HND).

 

INDYSPOTLIGHT: Hmmm! May God continue to keep you and sustain you and the rest of your family (Amen). So let’s go to the main and main reason why we came all the way from USA for this meeting with you. Which is “WHO IS DABO WILLIAMS”?

 

DW: (Sigh) Hmmm! Dabo Dabo Dabo!!!. Okay.

INDYSPOTLIGHT: what a profile. So what are you up to this days, what are you planning or cooking uip for your fans to know?

 

DW: well am currently working on my debut album scheduled for release this year, with some dynamic producers like LEGEND AJAH, PV IDEMUDIA, YoungBoss and others. The album is titled “GRACE  & MERCY”. It talks about the Journey of my life and what God did to me and for me. Raging from praises to great worship songs. And also the record label is planning a big praise concert in December.

 

INDYSPOTLIGHT: talking about your record label as the CEO, are you the only artiste under it?

 

DW: no. I have two signed artiste under it. OLUWATOMI a gospel rap artiste and BHUSSIE HALULHA one of Nigeria’s youngest female talking drummer

 

INDYSPOTLIGHT: so any challenges you have face or what are the challenges you have faced, so that others can learn from it?

 

DW: well the challenges facing the gospel artiste as a whole are much, but I will make mention of few, which are: the media, they demand so much from the upcoming ones and so much little from the big artiste and this is really killing the upcoming ones who are striving to be just to be heard out there. The known or big artiste, they are not helping the upcoming ones, they don’t support and encourage the upcoming ones, they stay at the top and just there and not helping others to grow, though not all of them but most of them. Lastly the church, the church is not helping the matter in anyways at all, the reason why we are loosing most of our talent to the world is coz the church are not encouring and supporting them and us. That’s all.

 

INDYSPOTLIGHT: May God help us all.  So words of advise for people coming behind you and also to your fans all over the world.

 

DW: hmmm! To people coming behind me, I will say pleas keep it simple and humble. Don’t do it for the gold now, do it for the passion and for your calling. Though its not easy, but I tell you what, delay doesn’t mean denial, though it tarries, it will surely come to pass. Hold on to your dreams and don’t loose focus which is JESUS. Put on the armor of faith and be courageous. Trials and tribulation you will definitely face, but rejoice its just for the main time.
